Concrete Grinding – Preparing an Old Concrete Floor

garage floor paint removal

Restoring a concrete floor using concrete grinding has a number of benefits. Whether it be removing the remains of tiles, the glue from lino or an uneven and dented slab that may have seen its fair share of action. You may be wanting to get a fresh modern polished concrete look or apply floating floorboards or tiles, what’s important is to have a flat even concrete surface to work with.

What is Concrete Grinding?

There a two main types of concrete grinding:

  • Tungsten grinders – You will commonly see evidence of this concrete grinding on a public footpath when the gap between concrete slabs has been ground even. This uses irregular tungsten washers spinning at speed and provides a rough but effective smoothing of the concrete.
  • Concrete Floor Sanders – The second method is by using an abrasive disc coated with diamond crystals. This acts like an industrial style sandpaper and is attached to wheel that grinds a concrete floor level and removes any surface imperfections.

Why is Concrete Grinding Useful for your Floor?

  • Remove surface imperfections – If the concrete has not been laid correctly, an uneven surface and surface imperfections will result. Grinding the surface smooth will restore the floor for many years to come and save the costly break-up, removal and relaying of the concrete.
  • Remove glue and paint – If the surface had been previously painted, or held lino, carpet or tiles, the glue and paint can often only be removed with grinding. Grinding is required as the paint and glue will have absorbed into the surface of the porous concrete.
  • Laying floor boards or tiles – A smooth level surface will ensure floor boards will not bend and tiles will not crack.
  • Prepare for polished concrete – A level and smooth concrete surface can be successively ground smoother and smoother with a less and less abrasive grinding wheel. This will eventually bring out a shiny and attractive finish. It’s important though to have the concrete inspected for its suitability for polishing, before going to the expense and effort.
  • Avoid trip hazards – By smoothing down the lip between two uneven concrete slabs you can avoid dangerous trip hazards and, in a workplace scenario, a potential compensation claim.

Concrete grinding is one of the three main types of concrete cutting. It is an effective technique, particularly on flooring. Due to the equipment required and safety precautions, in particular, concrete dust, it’s best to hire a professional.
