The Concrete Grinding & Sealing Process
Step 1: Cleaning
We thoroughly brush and vacuum the concrete floor to remove any loose materials and ensure no screws, bolts or other protrusions are present. Our high powered vacuums will remove up to 98% of surface dust.
It is important to be aware that this method of concrete grinding deals with a mainly level and even concrete floor. If your floor has significant undulations these are unlikely to be removed. Concrete grinding and sealing is best used to refurbish a concrete floor that has paint, glue or minor imperfections.
Step 2: Edging
We start grinding at the edges to get the right level to work with for the rest of the slab. To refurbish a concrete surface we use heavy duty industrial grinders that act much like an electric sander. These grinders differ from the concrete grinders used to remove trip hazards between two concrete slabs.
If we are working on multiple slabs and these are not level we may need to use a tungsten grinder to level off the slabs before using the concrete sander to create the smooth and clean finish to the surface.
Step 3: Grinding
The grinding machine will be taken over the concrete surface methodically so that the entire concrete slab has been ground back. Usually, 2-3 passes will be made using progressively finer grades of sander. This process can continue if a smoother surface is required.
Concrete grinding (or sanding) is also done prior to creating a polished concrete floor. A polished concrete floor requires many passes to be made and also relies on the concrete surface to be of high quality and is normally performed on a freshly laid slab. We can discuss the pros and cons of a highly polished concrete floor compared with a concrete grind and seal finish.
Step 4: Cleaning & Preparing to Seal
After grinding, all the concrete dust is removed using the specialised concrete dust extractors which remove more than 98% of the surface dust to allow the application of your choice of epoxy sealant.
A concrete floor doesn’t need to be sealed, it will look and perform well after grinding alone. An epoxy sealant does make the surface easier to clean and can help prevent spills, such as oil from staining the concrete surface.
Step 5: Apply the Epoxy Sealant
We have a range of epoxy sealants to apply to a freshly ground concrete floor to add a clear finish and protect the surface from staining.
The entire area is taped to protect surrounding surfaces. A number of coats of sealant can be applied to provide a higher level of sheen and protection. We can advise on the most appropriate level of sealant required for your intended use.
Step 6: Ready for Use!
After the application of the epoxy sealant it is advised to wait at least 36 hours before walking on or using the surface.
Our process is a proven way to restore life into an old concrete floor. If you are converting an old space into a new space then concrete grinding and sealing is an ideal solution to get an attractive and low maintenance floor surface.
